THE ADVENTURES OF FATHER SILAS (originally published as Le Portier des Chartreux) first appeared in 1742 and was probably written by the French lawyer, Beauregard de Farniente, whose aim seems to have been to expose the licentious practices of some of the unmarried clergy in 18thcentury France. It is possible that this book may have been an influence on the later writings of the Marquis de Sade.
