153 An Afternoon With Timothy Leary (Audio CD)

Leary, Timothy & Hyatt, Christopher CD

Brand New

In 1987 at Timothy Leary's house in Beverly Hills, California, Tim and Dr. Christopher S. Hyatt got together and made this recording. But the cassette went missing for over 20 years and just recently resurfaced! Their discussion is fascinating on many levels. Among other things, you might note how these two very talented people brainstorm the then-upcoming re-release of Tim's Future History Series: Exo-Psychology (redone as Info-Psychology), Neuropolitics (retitled Neuropolitique), The Game of Life, Intelligence Agents, and What Does WoMan Want? Some of the ideas came to fruition, some did not. Such is the nature of the creative process...

156 An Appeal to the Young

Kropotkin, Peter 1926878043 / 9781926878041 Trade Paperback

Brand New!

Peter Kropotkin...was recognized by friend and foe as one of the greatest minds...of the nineteenth century...The lucidity and brilliance of his mind combined with his warm-heartedness into the harmonious whole of a fascinating and gracious personality. -Emma Goldman REVOLT! Addressed to young men and women preparing to enter the professions, An Appeal to the Young was first published in 1880 in Kropotkin's paper, La Revolte, and was soon thereafter issued as a pamphlet. An American edition was brought out by Charles H. Kerr in 1899, in the wake of the great Anarchist's first U.S. speaking tour; his Memoirs of a Revolutionist was also published (by Houghton-Mifflin) that year. A new edition in Kerr's Pocket Library of Socialism appeared in 1901; just after Kropotkin's second U.S. tour. (In Chicago, he had been introduced to a large audience by Clarence Darrow, a close associate of the Kerr Company.) Yet another Kerr edition in the 1910s went through many printings, and was still on the Kerr list well into the 1930s. Long unavailable in any U.S. edition, it is reprinted here in the standard English translation by pioneer British socialist H.M. Hyndman, whose lush Victorian prose ably captures the eloquence, fervor and charm of this celebrated revolutionary classic.

157 An Herbal Medicine-Making Primer

Laura Luddite Last Word Press 2014 PAMPHLET

Like so much in this consumerist society, it is easy to ignore the connections between a bottle on a shelf in some store and a living, growing plant out in the world somewhere. It can be hard to know if the plant grows a mile away or on another continent. There is much to be said for reconnecting, for educating ourselves about the herbs we use and gathering our own medicine when we can. That's how we will be able to build a whole new system of healing, one that can support our movement away from the corporate power structure that the practice of medicine has become.

This zine seeks to remedy this by giving detailed instructions about menstra, tinctures, salves, creams, sitz baths, salt scrubs, and more. This zine also contains the essay "This is Anarcho-Herbalism" by Laurel Luddite.

162 Anarchism & American Traditions

Voltairine de Cleyre Last Word Press 2014 PAMPHLET

Anarchism & American Tradtions, by Voltairine de Cleyre; 28 staple bound pamphlet/zine. Voltairine de Cleyre was an American anarchist writer and feminist. She was a prolific writer and speaker, opposing the state, marriage, and the domination of religion in sexuality and womens lives. She began her activist career in the free thought movement. De Cleyre was initially drawn to individualist anarchism but evolved through mutualism to an anarchism without adjectives. She believed that any system was acceptable as long as it did not involve force. However, according to anarchist author Iain McKay, she embraced the ideals of stateless communism. She was a colleague of Emma Goldman, with whom she maintained a relationship of respectful disagreement on many issues. Many of her essays were in the Collected Works of Voltairine de Cleyre, published posthumously by Mother Earth in 1914.

163 Anarchism & Education: A Philosophical Perspective

Suissa, Judith Trade Paperback

Brand New!

While there have been historical accounts of the anarchist school movement, there has been no systematic work on the philosophical underpinnings of anarchist educational ideas--until now. Anarchism and Education offers a philosophical account of the neglected tradition of anarchist thought on education. Although few anarchist thinkers wrote systematically on education, this analysis is based largely on a reconstruction of the educational thought of anarchist thinkers gleaned from their various ethical, philosophical and popular writings. Primarily drawing on the work of the nineteenth century anarchist theorists such as Bakunin, Kropotkin and Proudhon, the book also covers twentieth century anarchist thinkers such as Noam Chomsky, Paul Goodman, Daniel Guerin and Colin Ward. This original work will interest philosophers of education and educationalist thinkers as well as those with a general interest in anarchism.

165 Anarchism and Its Aspirations

Milstein, Cindy Trade Paperback

From nineteenth-century newspaper publishers to the participants in the battle of Seattle and the recent Greek uprising, anarchists have been inspired by the ideal of a free society of free individuals-a world without hierarchy or domination. Anarchism and Its Aspirations provides an accessible overview of an often-misunderstood political philosophy, highlighting its principles and practices as well as its reconstructive vision of a liberatory society. A brilliant primer of anarchist politics. -Matt Hern, author of Common Ground in a Liquid City I expect Anarchism and Its Aspirations to become the introduction to anarchism of the next decade. -Gabriel Kuhn, editor of Gustav Landauer's Revolution and Other Writings A road map to the many social and cultural movements that anarchism has traversed . . . a testimony to its continuing ability to capture the radical imagination. -Silvia Federici, author of Caliban and the Witch Uncompromising, practical, and hopeful, this book is essential reading for all who are taking on climate change, war, or corporate capitalism. -David Solnit, coauthor of The Battle of the Story of the Battle of Seattle Cindy Milstein is an Institute for Anarchist Studies board member and a co-organizer of the Renewing the Anarchist Tradition conference. 166 Anarchism and Organization

Malatesta, Errico Pamphlet

Brand New!

What sorts of organizing lead to the social relationships that anarchists desire to bring about, and in turn empower anarchist organizations and organizing? In this short text, Malatesta describes forms of community, organizing, and other activity that lend themselves to realizing these objectives. He talks about the relationship of independence and responsibility, and he distinguishes the difference between organization and hierarchy, debunking the idea that organization means submission to stifling, unaccountable authority.

168 Anarchism and the City: Revolution and Counter-Revolution in Barcelona, 1898-1937

Ealham, Chris Trade Paperback

Brand New!

A magnificent, revelatory history of a city of slums and a proletariat of hope. The best book that I've read in the last decade.?Mike Davis, author of City of Quartz, Planet of Slums, and Buda's Wagon Between 1898 and 1937, competing interests from the national government, the regional industrialists, and the working class, fought for control of Barcelona. The social realities of Barcelona?as Spain's economic, cultural, social, and political capital?provided a perfect backdrop for battle over the urban future. Chris Ealham explores these complex and often violent relationships, utilizing an innovative blend of history, urbanism, sociology, and cultural studies. No other work digs this deep into the composition of an urban working class movement?and certainly not with such a sympathetic eye for the aspirations of its anarchist denizens. Scrupulously researched and well written, this is the finest study of working-class anarchist life and culture since Paul Avrich's The Haymarket Tragedy. Not only a study of working-class Barcelona, Anarchism and the City is the story of anarchists organizing themselves where they lived, and of the militant culture they were a part of and helped to create. Ealham's book draws on a marvelous array of sources, and offers a picture of anarchism in Spain that is both groundbreaking, honest, and, yes, inspirational. This is the history of the barris coming alive in your hands. Put simply, no future study of anarchism can ever ignore this book, which comes closer than any other English-language work in understanding what anarchism and its practice meant to Spanish working-class people at the time.?Barry Pateman, Associate Editor at the Emma Goldman Papers and editor of Chomsky on Anarchism Chris Ealham currently lives and works in Madrid, where he teaches History at Saint Louis University. He is a specialist in Spanish labor history and movements, especially those of anarchist and anarcho-syndicalist inspiration. His work has been translated into Castilian, Catalan, and Italian. He also writes for the Spanish daily and anarchist press on topics ranging from soccer to urban planning. Chris is currently writing a biographical study of Jos Peirats (19081989), a prominent Spanish anarchist activist, historian, journalist, and former secretary-general of the CNT. Paul Preston is Prncipe de Asturias Professor of Contemporary Spanish History at the London School of Economics and author of Franco, A Biography, and several books on the Spanish Civil War.

169 Anarchism for Beginners

Mayer, Marcos For Beginners 2008 9.78E+12 Illustrated. Trade paperback

New Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. 170 p. Contai Sanyu

The ideas of Proudhon, Bakunin, and Kropotkin, that seemed to have been buried by history, especially since the second half of 20th century, are regathering their strength. As seen by the number of libertarian flags at anti-globalization and anti-corporation rallies, their axioms appear in contemporary debates on neoliberalism and ecology, the number of websites is multiplying, indeed, passing on their principles. And intellectuals like Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze, Osvaldo Bayer, Noam Chomsky, and Murray Boochkin recognize in their work what they've inherited from these original nonconformists. The history built by the anarchists during their fight against power, oppression and the State, that reached its highest point in farmer's communes in pre-Franco Spain, also affected the culture and were fundamental to a vanguard of artists of the 20th century, as well as being part of some popular culture phenomena, such as the punk movement. In this text by Marcos Mayer, accompanied by the notable illustrations of Sanyú, Anarchism For Beginners covers the history and influence of this movement through its contradictions and missteps, as well as its notable creativity and indefatigable fighting spirit.

173 Anarchism, Marxism, and the Future of the Left: Interviews and Essays, 1993-1998

Bookchin, Murray Trade Paperback

Brand New!

Murray Bookchin has been a dynamic revolutionary propagandist since the 1930s when, as a teenager, he orated before socialist crowds in New York City and engaged in support work for those fighting Franco in the Spanish Civil War. Now, for the first time in book form, this volume presents a series of exciting and engaged interviews with, and essays from, the founder of social ecology. This expansive collection ranges over, amongst others, Bookchin's account of his teenage years as a young Communist during the Great Depression, his experiences of the 1960s and reflections on that decade's lessons, his vision of a libertarian communist society, libertarian politics, the future of anarchism, and the unity of theory and practice. He goes on to assess the crisis of radicalism today and defends the need for a revolutionary Left. Finally, he states what is to be valued in both anarchism and Marxism in building such a Left and offers guidelines for forming a new revolutionary social movement.

180 Anarchist Farm

Doe, Jane 1886625018 / 9781886625013 Paperback

Brand New!

Next time you're dusting off the bookshelf or cleaning out your backpack, be sure to make room next to your tattered ol' copy of Orwell's Animal Farm for its modern day sister sequel: Anarchist Farm by Jane Doe. You see, while the rest of us have been ballyhooing in our beers about diversity, or lack thereof, within the movement, Jane Doe has been busy taking the offensive. She pulled a character or two from each of a dozen or so cauldrons and threw them together into one fabulously woven tale. Anarchist Farm illustrates diversity in action. It's a raucous tale of revolution and liberation, replete with caricatures of Earth First! Food Not Bombs, hippies, crispies and even a lesbian pig. The book does not strive for complex philosophical debate. Instead, Anarchist Farm is endearingly simplistic and surprisingly inspiring. What could be more charming than a bunch of wild animals monkeywrenching logging equipment, domestic critters overthrowing their farm, and an eventual coalition between the two to subvert the corporate beast? It's goofy, it's funny and it's damn smart. Much of the symbolism is true and timely and a little too obvious for us to ignore. The obstacle that looms between the animals and the Great Stampede is humbly summed up in the immortal words of Hans, the gun-totin' German shepherd: The corporation wants us to hate each other and fight each other. That keeps us too busy to fight them. Amid the silliness, Jane Doe never undermines the very serious and difficult choices we -- as a real life movement of people -- must make when reconciling our principles with out goals. Because of this, Anarchist Farm does a great service to those of us grasping for a contemporary context for non-violence. Okay, it, might not be destined to be a classic, but it is good and it beats the hell out of reading another scholastic observation of the proverbial us from someone safely on the outside. This is an insider's witty perspective. Anarchist Farm is a worthy tribute to the chaos and charisma of our movement. It encourages us, if, not to recognize our revolutionary potential, to laugh at ourselves along the way.
