 801.  Beyond the Music: How Punks are Saving the World with DIY Ethics, Skills, & Values

Biel, Joe 1621064727 Trade Paperback

Brand new!

Punk is notorious for its loud music, aggressive attitude, and safety-pinned style. Less well known is the radical value system that has emerged hand in hand with the sound and aesthetic. Since the 1970s, punks have built their music, fashion, and lifestyles around core values of social justice, creative freedom, community integrity, fiercely democratic politics and do-it-yourself ingenuity. From journalism to psychology, graphic design to alternative fuel, bodybuilding to the Occupy movement, these interviews show just some of the ways that punk values continue to shape mainstream American life.

 802.  Anarchists on Anarchism

Biel, Joe (Editor) Paperback

Brand New!

Here, in their own words, are the quotes of many historic figures in the global anarchist movement. Anarchism, a political philosophy which considers the state undesirable, unnecessary, and even harmful, promotes a classless, stateless society that is self-governed. Anarchists seek to diminish and eliminate reliance on authority in their quest for justice. These quotes while inspirational are often as divided as they are uniform, for what is political ideology if written in stone?

Brand New!

This Is What Democracy Looks Like, a co-production of the IMC and Big Noise Films, weaves the footage of over 100 videographers into a gripping document of what really happened on Seattle’s streets.  813.  The Left Left Behind

Bisson, Terry Paperback

Brand New

Hugo and Nebula award-winner Terry Bisson is best known for his short stories, which range from the southern sweetness of “Bears Discover Fire” to the alienated aliens of “They’re Made Out of Meat.” He is also a 1960’s New Left vet with a history of activism and an intact (if battered) radical ideology. The Left Behind novels (about the so-called “Rapture” in which all the born-agains ascend straight to heaven) are among the bestselling Christian books in the US, describing in lurid detail the adventures of those “left behind” to battle the Anti-Christ. Put Bisson and the Born-Agains together, and what do you get? The Left Left Behind--a sardonic, merciless, tasteless, take-no-prisoners satire of the entire apocalyptic enterprise that spares no one--predatory preachers, goth lingerie, Pacifica radio, Indian casinos, gangsta rap, and even “art cars” at Burning Man. Plus: Special Relativity, a one-act drama that answers the question: When Albert Einstein, Paul Robeson, and J. Edgar Hoover are raised from the dead at an anti-Bush rally, which one wears the dress? As with all Outspoken Author books, there is a deep interview and autobiography: at length, in-depth, no-holds-barred and all-bets off: an extended tour though the mind and work, the history and politics of our Outspoken Author. Surprises are promised.

 826.  When Miner's March

Blizzard, William C. Trade Paperback

Brand New!

In the first half of the 20th century, strikes and Union battles, murders and frame-ups, were common in every industrial center in the U.S. But none of these episodes compared in scope to the West Virginia Mine Wars. The uprisings of coal miners that defined the Mine Wars of the 1920’s were a direct result of the Draconian rule of the coal companies. The climax was the Battle of Blair Mountain, the largest open and armed rebellion in U.S. history. The Battle, and Union leader Bill Blizzard’s quest for justice, was only quelled when the U.S. Army brought guns, poison gas and aerial bombers to stop the 10,000 bandanna-clad miners who formed the spontaneous “Red Neck Army.” Over half a century ago, William C. Blizzard wrote the definitive insider’s history of the Mine Wars and the resulting trial for treason of his father, the fearless leader of the Red Neck Army. Events dramatized in John Sayles film Matewan, and fictionalized in Denise Giardina’s stirring novel Storming Heaven, are here recounted as they occurred. This is a people's history, complete with previously unpublished family photos and documents. If it brawls a little, and brags a little, and is angry more than a little, well, the people in this book were that way.

New Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. 596 p. Contai

A LITTLE HISTORY In 1983, David Blume wrote and hosted a 10-part how-to television series called Alcohol as Fuel for KQED, the San Francisco PBS affiliate. He also wrote the definitive how-to book on ethanol, Alcohol Can Be A Gas! , which was going to be sold on the air. The book was at the printer preparing to go to press, and the first airing of the television series in San Francisco was underway, to be followed by release to 140 PBS stations nationwide. Big Oil got wind of the project and convinced KQED to halt the printing and cancel the release of the series to the rest of PBS. Although there were lawsuits, KQED's oil-funded lawyers crushed Blume, and the series ended up locked in KQED's vault, while the rights to the book went back to Blume. The book sat on the shelf for the past 20 years. Beginning in 2003, Dave Blume set about updating the book in a big way. He raised money from individuals (not institutions or corporations) to fund his research into the current state of the art in alcohol fuels. He traveled extensively in both the US and Brazil, collecting and documenting innovations and the success of Brazil's alcohol fuel program. Four years of full-time work with a team of researchers has resulted in a completely new and greatly expanded version of the book. THE NEW BOOK Alcohol Can Be a Gas! (subtitled Fueling an Ethanol Revolution for the 21st Century) is an information-dense, highly readable, profusely illustrated manual, covering every aspect of alcohol fuel from history through crops, hands-on fuel production, and vehicle conversion. It's the first comprehensive book on small-to farm-scale alcohol production and use written in over 90 years. Internally divided into six books, the single volume contains 640 8.5 x 11 pages, with more than 500 illustrations, charts, and photos. It sports a 700-word glossary and a full index. It retains the original 1983 foreword by R. Buckminster Fuller. Alcohol Can Be A Gas! is a complete toolbox for farmers, green e

Boal, Augusto London Pluto 2000 745316573 Trade paperback

New

Text in English, Spanish. 216p. : ill.; 22 cm. Pluto classics. Part of Pluto's 21st birthday series "Get Political", which brings essential political writing in a range of fields to a new audience. This new edition of "Theater of the Oppressed" brings a classic work on radical drama fully up to date and includes a new introduction by the author Augusto Boal. Boal restores theatre to its proper place as a popular form of communication and expression. He demonstrates the ways in which theatre has come to reflect ruling-class control, drawing on the theories of Aristotle and Machiavelli. He then shows the process reversed in Brechtian/Marxist poetics to the revolutionary potential of transforming the spectator into the actor. Throughout, Boal draws on his own experience in Latin America and illustrates his theory with practical examples.

 832.  West of Eden: Communes and Utopia in Northern California

Boal, Iain & Others 1604864273 Trade Paperback

In the shadow of the Vietnam War, a significant part of an entire generation refused their assigned roles in the American century. Some took their revolutionary politics to the streets, others decided simply to turn away, seeking to build another world together, outside the state and the market. West of Eden charts the remarkable flowering of communalism in the 60s and 70s, fueled by a radical rejection of the Cold War corporate deal, utopian visions of a peaceful green planet, the new technologies of sound and light, and the ancient arts of ecstatic release. The book focuses on the San Francisco Bay Area and its hinterlands, which have long been creative spaces for social experiment. Haight-Ashbury's gift economy—its free clinic, concerts, and street theatre—and Berkeley's liberated zones—Sproul Plaza, Telegraph Avenue, and People's Park—were embedded in a wider network of producer and consumer co-ops, food conspiracies, and collective schemes. Using memoir and flashbacks, oral history and archival sources, West of Eden explores the deep historical roots and the enduring, though often disavowed, legacies of the extraordinary pulse of radical energies that generated forms of collective life beyond the nuclear family and the world of private consumption, including the contradictions evident in such figures as the guru/predator or the hippie/entrepreneur. There are vivid portraits of life on the rural communes of Mendocino and Sonoma, and essays on the Black Panther communal households in Oakland, the latter-day Diggers of San Francisco, the Native American occupation of Alcatraz, the pioneers of live/work space for artists, and the Bucky dome as the iconic architectural form of the sixties. Due to the prevailing amnesia—partly imposed by official narratives, partly self-imposed in the aftermath of defeat—West of Eden is not only a necessary act of reclamation, helping to record the unwritten stories of the motley generation of communards and antinomians now passing, but is also intended as an offering to the coming generation who will find here, in the rubble of the twentieth century, a past they can use—indeed one they will need—in the passage from the privations of commodity capitalism to an ample life in common.

 839.  Vegan Nation

Bogle, Rick 0984284478 Trade Paperback

Brand New!

An activist launches an outlaw campaign to stop animal abusers for good, in a militant effort to spark a vegan revolution. In 1858, Abraham Lincoln stated that slavery would not end for at least a century. In 1859, abolitionist John Brown waged a war of weapons against slaveholders, shortening this time to seven years. He is now recorded in history as “the man who killed slavery”. Today, animals are killed by the billions for food and science, while activists who lawfully protest this cruelty are vilified and imprisoned as “terrorists”. In time, those responsible for this violence may very well reap what they have sown. This is the story of one such future. It is a story of a present-day John Brown, bringing the war against animals home to their abusers – a last recourse that may finally bring about a vegan nation.

 841.  Sacred Mushrooms and the Law

Boire, Richard Glen & McKenna, Terence (foreword) Paperback

Brand New

SACRED MUSHROOMS were used to assist in visionary states as early as 4000 BC and in religious ceremonies long before the Aztec civilization. Many believe that the mushrooms talk to them, opening up channels of communication with animals and spirit entities. The First Amendment to the Constitution guaranteed each of us freedom of religious expression. Yet, for all practical purposes, the entheogenic experience?finding God within?has been outlawed in the United States, even among indigenous people. In Sacred Mushrooms & the Law attorney Richard Glen Boire, author of the best selling Marijuana Law , provides a much needed review of federal and state law (with cases) regarding the possession and use of sacred mushrooms. The law is an arcane mish-mash that renders nature an illicit drug-lab. Boire offers a fascinating discourse on cognitive liberty in which he compares the laws criminalizing the use of entheogenic mushrooms to a kind of Newspeak. In George Orwell?s dystopian novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, the Oceania government established Newspeak, a carefully crafted language designed by the government for the purpose of making unapproved modes of thought impossible. Our modern laws that criminalize sacred mushrooms effectively outlaw unapproved states of consciousness?including certain religious ecstatic experiences. Sacred Mushrooms & the Law reviews federal and state laws relative to psilocybin and psilocin mushrooms, tells how to determine punishments, reveals the profile postal workers use to identify a drug package, explores possible defenses, and much more.

 842.  Between Parentheses

Bolano, Roberto 0811218147 Hardcover

Brand New!

Between Parentheses collects most of the newspaper columns and articles Bolano wrote during the last five years of his life, as well as the texts of some of his speeches and talks and a few scattered prologues. Taken together, as the editor Ignacio Echevarra remarks in his introduction, they provide a personal cartography of the writer: the closest thing, among all his writings, to a kind of fragmented autobiography. Bolano's career as a nonfiction writer began in 1998, the year he became famous overnight for The Savage Detectives; he was suddenly in demand for articles and speeches, and he took to this new vocation like a duck to water. Cantankerous, irreverent, and insufferably opinionated, Bolano also could be tender (about his family and favorite places) as well as a fierce advocate for his heroes (Borges, Cortzar, Parra) and his favorite contemporaries, whose books he read assiduously and promoted generously. A demanding critic, he declares that in his “ideal literary kitchen there lives a warrior”: he argues for courage, and especially for bravery in the face of failure. Between Parentheses fully lives up to his own demands: ask for creativity from literary criticism, creativity at all levels.

Bolano, Roberto 0374275629 Hardcover

Brand New!

Late one night, Charly disappears without a trace, and Udo’s well-ordered life is thrown into upheaval; while Ingeborg and Hanna return to their lives in Germany, he refuses to leave the hotel. Soon he and El Quemado are enmeshed in a round of Third Reich, Udo’s favorite World War II strategy game, and Udo discovers that the game’s consequences may be all too real. Written in 1989 and found among Roberto Bolaño’s papers after his death, The Third Reich is a stunning exploration of memory and violence. Reading this quick, visceral novel, we see a world-class writer coming into his own—and exploring for the first time the themes that would de?ne his masterpieces The Savage Detectives and 2666.

 846.  The Anarchist Tension

Bonanno, Alfred Elephant Editions 2004

New 32 p. photocopied stapled pamphlet

Anarchism is not a concept that can be locked up in a word like a gravestone. It is not a political theory. It is a way of conceiving life. And life, young or old as we may be, is not something definitive: it is a stake we must play day after day. When we wake up in the morning and put our feet on the ground we must have a good reason for getting up. If we don't it makes no difference whether we are anarchists or not. We might as well stay in bed and sleep. Writings about insurrectionary anarchism by Alfredo M. Bonanno, an Italian anarchist currently serving six years for charges related to the famous Marini Trial.

 853.  Deadly Harvest: The Intimate Relationship Between Our Health and Our Food

Bond, Geoff Trade Paperback

Brand New!

With a record number of overweight people and an alarming increase in degenerative diseases, many of us find ourselves turning to meds or fad diets in an effort to drop excess pounds or recover our health. Since most drugs come with dangerous side effects, modifying our diet would seem relatively safe and simple. But what if our foods were doing more harm than good, and fad diets only made matters worse? Deadly Harvest is a groundbreaking book that carefully examines how the foods we eat today have little in common with the foods of our ancestors, and why this fact is so important to our health. It also offers a proven program to enhance health, combat illness, and improve longevity. Author Geoff Bond is a nutritional anthropologist who has for years investigated both foods of the past and our prehistoric eating habits. Using the latest scientific research and studies of primitive tribal lifestyles, Bond first explains the actual diet that our ancestors followed--a diet that was and still is in harmony with the human species. He then describes how the foods in today's diets disrupt our biochemistry and digestive system, leading to health disorders such as allergies, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, obesity, and more. Most important, he explains the appropriate measures we can take to avoid these diseases--and even beat them back--through healthy eating. Contrary to what many people believe, the disorders that plague our society are not inevitable, but are the unfortunate result of modern dietary choices. Deadly Harvest not only explains why these problems have arisen, but offers a blueprint for improving our diet, our health, and our quality of life.

 855.  New Green Home Solutions: Renewable Household Energy & Sustainable Living

Bonta, Dave & Snyder, Stephen Trade Paperback

Brand New!

Green living begins at home, and New Green Home Solutions tells you how. Most of the energy-derived pollution we produce comes as a direct result of our homes - how we heat them, how we cool them, how we keep them well-lit and full of things that make our lives so comfortable. The good news is that we have tremendous power to create change. Renewable energy design, better insulation and more efficient appliances could reduce energy demands by 60 to 80 percent. By embracing conservation and renewable energy, we can win our energy independence and help save the planet. Dave Bonta, president and founder of USA Solar Stores, the largest alternative energy retailer in the Northeast, has written about alternative energy and sustainable living for Green Living, Back Home Magazine, Alternative Energy Retailer and The Vermont Guardian. Bonta has studied renewable energy and energy efficiency for more than twenty years, is a frequent speaker at major green energy conferences across America and is a tireless advocate for green living. Also president of BioQuantum, Inc., a bio-fuels company, Bonta is the creator of BackHome chapters in America and is president of a renewable energy community organization, The Sustainable Valley Group. Stephen Snyder, communications director for USA Solar Stores, left New York City in 1995 to start an organic herb farm in Vermont with his wife, Melissa. He holds a degree in radio, television and motion picture communications from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has broad experience in communications, public affairs, and media relations.  856.  Social Ecology and Communalism

Bookchin, Murray AK Press 2007 9.78E+12 Trade paperback

New Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. 118 p. Audien

We are standing at a crucial crossroads. Not only does the age-old 'social question' concerning the exploitation of human labor remain unresolved, but the plundering of natural resources has reached a point where humanity is also forced to politically deal with an 'ecological question. ' Today, we have to make conscious choices about what direction society should take to properly meet these challenges...This is a highly accessible introduction to Social Ecology and Communalism, as it has been developed by one of the most exciting and pioneering thinkers of the twentieth century. Murray Bookchin's political philosophy suggests that the solution to the enormous social and ecological problems we face today fundamentally lies in the formation of a new citizenry, its empowerment through new political institutions, and a new political culture. Eirik Eiglad, from the Introduction These four essays, written between 1989 and 2002 and collected here for the first time in this volume, provide an excellent overview of Murray Bookchin's political philosophy. Murray Bookchin (1921 2006) was a life-long radical a trade unionist in the 1930s and 1940s, an innovative social theorist through the 1960s, a leading participant in the anti-nuclear wing of the Greens in the 1970s and 1980s, and co-founder of the Institute for Social Ecology. He was a prolific author and important thinker. Editor Eirik Eiglad has been involved with the ideas and politics of social ecology for more than fifteen years. He edits the journal Communalism.

Bookchin, Murray AK Press 2005 9.78E+12 Trade paperback

New Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. 491 p. Audien

Bookchin's crowning work. Now with a new preface by the author. The most systematic articulation of ideas. San Francisco Review of Books ...a confirmation of his [Bookchin's] status as a penetrating critic not only of the ways in which humankind is destroying itself, but of the ethical imperative to live better. The Village Voice Elegantly written, and recommended for a wide audience. Library Journal Bookchin offers a radical critique of this society, one I wanted very much to hear. The Nation His (Bookchin's) newest book is perhaps the most ambitious; the topic and the scope are tremendous. But his energy and the vigor of his intelligence are commensurately broad. Sierra The Ecology of Freedom is an eloquent, erudite, and highly ambitious work...Whatever one's perspective, one is likely to find in it much material for worthwhile reflection on the human condition. For many who are disillusioned with the reigning traditions of materialism, idealism, and dualism...the work will be of major significance. Telos The very notion of the domination of nature by man stems from the very real domination of human by human. With this succinct formulation, Murray Bookchin launches his most ambitious work, The Ecology of Freedom. An engaging and extremely readable book of breathtaking scope, its inspired synthesis of ecology, anthropology, and political theory traces our conflicting legacies of hierarchy and freedom, from the first emergence of human culture to today's globalized capitalism, constantly pointing the way to a sane, sustainable ecological future. On a college syllabus or in an activist's backpack, this book is indispensable reading for anyone who's tired of living in a world where everything is an exploitable resource. Murray Bookchin, cofounder of the Institute for Social Ecology, has been an active voice in the ecology and anarchist movements for more than forty years. The author of numerous books and articles, he lives in Burlington, Vermont.

New Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. 267 p. Audien

Why do we overeat time and time again? Why do we make poor diet choices while we want to be healthy? What makes losing weight so difficult? These and many other vital questions are addressed in 12 Steps to Raw Foods in an open and sincere dialogue. Based on the latest scientific research, Victoria Boutenko explains the numerous benefits of choosing a diet of fresh rather than cooked foods. This book contains self-tests and questionnaires that help the reader to determine if they have hidden eating patterns that undermine their health. Using examples from life, the author explores the most common reasons for people to make unhealthy eating choices. Rather than simply praising the benefits of raw foods, this book offers helpful tips and coping techniques to form and maintain new, healthy patterns. Learn how to make a raw food restaurant card that makes dining with co-workers easy and enjoyable. Discover three magic sentences that enable you to refuse your mother-in-law s apple pie without offending her. Find out how to sustain your chosen diet while traveling. These are only a few of the many scenarios that Boutenko outlines. Written in a convenient 12-step format, this book guides the reader through the most significant physical, psychological, and spiritual phases of the transition from cooked to raw foods. Embracing the raw food lifestyle is more than simply turning off the stove. Such a radical change in the way we eat affects all aspects of life. Boutenko touches on the human relationship with nature, the value of supporting others, and the importance of living in harmony with people who don t share the same point of view on eating. Already a classic, this enhanced second edition is aimed at anyone interested in improving their health through diet.

 866.  Fahrenheit 451: The Authorized Adaptation

Bradbury, Ray & Hamilton, Tim Paperback

Brand New

Monday burn Millay, Wednesday Whitman, Friday Faulkner, burn 'em to ashes, then burn the ashes. For Guy Montag, a career fireman for whom kerosene is perfume, this is not just an official slogan. It is a mantra, a duty, a way of life in a tightly monitored world where thinking is dangerous and books are forbidden. In 1953, Ray Bradbury envisioned one of the world's most unforgettable dystopian futures, and in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, the artist Tim Hamilton translates this frightening modern masterpiece into a gorgeously imagined graphic novel. As could only occur with Bradbury's full cooperation in this authorized adaptation, Hamilton has created a striking work of art that uniquely captures Montag's awakening to the evil of government-controlled thought and the inestimable value of philosophy, theology, and literature. Including an original foreword by Ray Bradbury and fully depicting the brilliance and force of his canonic and beloved masterwork, Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 is an exceptional, haunting work of graphic literature. Color. Since the original expounds the importance of valuing and preserving books and knowledge, adapting it into the comics form emphasizes the growth of the medium, as well as its potency across genres and subjects. -Publishers Weekly

When a disaster or civil disturbance occurs, firefighters, police officers and paramedics quickly become overburdened with requests to handle simple emergencies--emergencies that every one of us should be able to handle as they occur. This book will give you the knowledge to handle nine basic crises that typically follow a disaster and motivate you to assist your family and neighbors should a large-scale catastrophe strike your community. This is not just another book on stockpiling food and water. It is a crash course in the types of tasks normally handled by professional emergency-response personnel, written by a retired fire department captain with decades of experience training citizens in these skills. It is packed with hundreds of hands-on techniques and tips for disaster firefighting on your own, civilian search and rescue with light tools, vehicle rescue and firefighting, controlling utilities to prevent new problems, salvage and decontamination for home and business owners, and evacuation do's and don'ts. Just some of the specific skills you will learn include how to rescue people from building rubble and wrecked vehicles using only common tools, fight fires with an ordinary garden hose, shut off gas and electricity quickly and safely, set up emergency sanitation systems, seek refuge from an out-of-control fire, make contact with family and friends when standard communications are disrupted and much, much more. Throughout the book, the author shows you how to evaluate each situation rationally and confidently and decide when to handle the emergency yourself and when to call the authorities for help.

 868.  Handbook to Pracitical Disaster Preparedness for the Family 2nd Edition

Bradley, Arthur T. 1463531109 Paperback

Brand New!

Right out of the gate let me tell you what the book is NOT. It is not a book about fighting off hordes of flesh-eating zombies, should they ever rise from the grave. Nor will it describe how to survive a shipwreck by feasting on coconuts and roasted iguana. Finally, it is not intended to help you survive our planet being sucked into the cosmic fireball affectionately known as our Sun. If you wish to prepare for those types of events, I respectfully suggest that you continue your search for a more suitable text. This book IS designed to help your family prepare for more commonplace, yet still equally deadly disasters. The list is long and varied, and includes hurricanes, tornados, terrorist attacks, earthquakes, pandemics, financial collapse, floods, widespread blackouts, food shortages, airborne contamination, radiation exposure, and much more. The 430-page, 8″ x 10″ handbook is clear and easy to read with more than a hundred photos, illustrations, and worksheets. What makes this book different is that it focuses on practical steps that you and your family can take to become better prepared. At the end of your efforts, you will be rewarded with knowing that your family is far better prepared to handle real world challenges.

Brenner, Summer 1604863064 Trade Paperback

Brand new!

“You should be reading Summer Brenner.” – More Intelligent Life, The Economist. Originally published by Gallimard’s la Serie noire as Presque nulle part. Overview: Fifteen years ago, Kate Ryan and her daughter Ruby moved to the secluded village of Zamora in northern New Mexico to find a quiet life off the grid. But when Kate invites the wrong drifter home for the night, the delicate peace of their domain is shattered. Troy Mason manages to hang onto Kate for a few weeks, though his charm increasingly fails to offset his lies and delusions of grandeur. It is only a matter of time before the lies turn abusive, igniting a chain reaction of violence and murder. Not even a bullet in the leg will keep Troy from seeking revenge as he chases the missing Ruby over back roads through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, down the River of No Return, and to a white supremacy enclave in Idaho’s Bitterroot Wilderness. Nearly Nowhere explores the darkest places of the American West, emerging with only a fragile hope of redemption in the maternal ties that bind.

Brand New

To consider Wisdom Teeth is to acknowledge inevitable movement, shift, and sometimes pain. There’s change hidden just below the surface and, like it or not, once it breaks, everything has to make room. So goes the aptly titled debut poetry collection from poet and educator Derrick Weston Brown. Wisdom Teeth reveals the ongoing internal and external reconstruction of a poet's life and world, as told through a litany of forms and myriad of voices, some the poet’s own. Wisdom Teeth is a questioning work, a redefining of personal relationships, masculinity, race, and history. It’s a readjustment of bite, humor, and perspective as Brown channels hip-hop, Toni Morrison, and Snagglepuss to make way for the shudder and eruption of wisdom.

 895.  World on Fire

Brownstein, Michael Open City Books 2002

New

In our era of apocalyptic change, everything from terrorism to a stifling cultural sameness has become globalized. World on Fire is a poet's impassioned, prophetic examination of the human and environmental consequences of transnational capitalism. From the most recent developments in biotechnology to the brainwashing effects of mass media, from the addictive rush of global currency speculation to the rapid-fire annihilation of tropical forests for chopsticks and oil, World on Fire is unsparing in its exposure of the corruption of our contemporary empire, or "Pax Americana." It suggests, paradoxically, that in this much-heralded "Age of Information," the dominant paradigms are disconnection and amnesia. The death of the author's tyrannical father after years of suffering from Alzheimer's becomes a potent symbol for a culture unable to face its own crimes or reckon with its own history. Drawing on sources including Noam Chomsky, Eduardo Galeano, and Vandana Shiva, Brownstein has created a new form combining poetry, personal narrative, and social analysis. He incites readers to look past a standardized remote-control world order and reconsider non-Western, more holistic social models. An anthem, manifesto, and call to arms, World on Fire asks the reader to step outside of ego's bomb shelter and face world upheaval without fear, thereby transforming disaster into opportunity and allowing the space for the creation of a new life. This is a stunning and timely work from a writer who "combines an acute understanding of the human soul with a bold, poetic imagination" (Paul Auster on Brownstein's story collection Music from the Evening of the World).

 897.  Root Cellaring: Natural Cold Storage of Fruits & Vegetables

Bubel, Mike, and Art, Pam (Editor), and Bubel, Nancy Storey Publishing 1991 882667033 2nd ed. Trade paperback

New Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. 320 p. Audien

Product Description Anyone can learn to store fruits and vegetables safely and naturally with a cool, dark space (even a closet! ) and the step-by-step advice in this book. From the Back Cover Root cellaring, as many people remember but only a few people still practice, is a way of using the earth's naturally cool, stable temperature to store perishable fruits and vegetables. Root cellaring, as Mike and Nancy Bubel explain here, is a no-cost, simple, low-technology, energy-saving way to keep the harvest fresh all year long. In Root Cellaring, the Bubels tell how to successfully use this natural storage approach. It's the first book devoted entirely to the subject, and it covers the subject with a thoroughness that makes it the only book you'll ever need on root cellaring. Root Cellaring will tell you: * How to choose vegetable and fruit varieties that will store best * Specific individual storage requirements for nearly 100 home garden crops * How to use root cellars in the country, in the city, and in any environment * How to build root cellars, indoors and out, big and small, plain and fancy * Case histories--reports on the root cellaring techniques and experiences of many households all over North America Root cellaring need not be strictly a country concept. Though it's often thought of as an adjunct to a large garden, a root cellar can in fact considerably stretch the resources of a small garden, making it easy to grow late succession crops for storage instead of many rows for canning and freezing. Best of all, root cellars can easily fit anywhere. Not everyone can live in the country, but everyone can benefit from natural cold storage.

 900.  Fixing America: Breaking the Stranglehold of Corporate Rule, Big Media, and the Religious Right

Buchanan, John 975290681 Trade Paperback

Brand New!

An explosive analysis of what ails the United States. An award-winning investigative reporter provides a clear, honest diagnosis of the country's chronic diseases — corporate rule, big media, and the religious right — in this damning analysis. Exposing the darker side of capitalism, this critique raises alarms about the security of democracy in today's society, including the rise of the corporate state, the insidious role of professional lobbyists, the emergence of religion and theocracy as a right-wing political tactic, the failure of the mass media, and the sinister presence of an Orwellian neo-fascism. Drawing on historic voices that include John Adams, Mahatma Gandhi, Thomas Jefferson, Robert F. Kennedy, James Madison, Thomas Paine, and Mark Twain, this treatise articulates a fresh vision for 21st-century America that deserves the attention of every patriot. John Buchanan is an internationally published journalist and author whose work has appeared in more than 30 countries on six continents. He is founding editor and publisher of Maine Magazine and the recipient of many awards, including the Best News Writer in Miami selected by the Miami Beach Sun-Post in 1999, Best Freelance Writer selected by LocalBusiness.com in 2000, and 911 Truth Candidate featured in The New Pearl Harbor.
