 901.  I-5: A Novel of Crime, Transport, and Sex

Brenner, Summer PM Press 2009 9.78E+12 Trade paperback

New

A novel of crime, transport, and sex, I-5 tells the bleak and brutal story of Anya and her journey north from Los Angeles to Oakland on the interstate that bisects the Central Valley of California. Anya is the victim of a deep deception. Someone has lied to her; and because of this lie, she is kept under lock and key, used by her employer to service men, and indebted for the privilege. In exchange, she lives in the United States and fantasizes on a future American freedom. Or as she remarks to a friend, Would she rather be fucking a dog...or living like a dog? In Anya s world, it s a reasonable question. Much of I-5 transpires on the eponymous interstate. Anya travels with her manager and driver from Los Angeles to Oakland. It s a macabre journey: a drop at Denny s, a bad patch of fog, a visit to a correctional facility, a rendezvous with an organ grinder, and a dramatic entry across Oakland s city limits.

Brenner, Summer 1604863064 Trade Paperback

Brand new!

“You should be reading Summer Brenner.” – More Intelligent Life, The Economist. Originally published by Gallimard’s la Serie noire as Presque nulle part. Overview: Fifteen years ago, Kate Ryan and her daughter Ruby moved to the secluded village of Zamora in northern New Mexico to find a quiet life off the grid. But when Kate invites the wrong drifter home for the night, the delicate peace of their domain is shattered. Troy Mason manages to hang onto Kate for a few weeks, though his charm increasingly fails to offset his lies and delusions of grandeur. It is only a matter of time before the lies turn abusive, igniting a chain reaction of violence and murder. Not even a bullet in the leg will keep Troy from seeking revenge as he chases the missing Ruby over back roads through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, down the River of No Return, and to a white supremacy enclave in Idaho’s Bitterroot Wilderness. Nearly Nowhere explores the darkest places of the American West, emerging with only a fragile hope of redemption in the maternal ties that bind.

Brown, Derrick Weston 1604864176 Paperback

Brand New

To consider Wisdom Teeth is to acknowledge inevitable movement, shift, and sometimes pain. There’s change hidden just below the surface and, like it or not, once it breaks, everything has to make room. So goes the aptly titled debut poetry collection from poet and educator Derrick Weston Brown. Wisdom Teeth reveals the ongoing internal and external reconstruction of a poet's life and world, as told through a litany of forms and myriad of voices, some the poet’s own. Wisdom Teeth is a questioning work, a redefining of personal relationships, masculinity, race, and history. It’s a readjustment of bite, humor, and perspective as Brown channels hip-hop, Toni Morrison, and Snagglepuss to make way for the shudder and eruption of wisdom.

 928.  World on Fire

Brownstein, Michael Open City Books 2002

New

In our era of apocalyptic change, everything from terrorism to a stifling cultural sameness has become globalized. World on Fire is a poet's impassioned, prophetic examination of the human and environmental consequences of transnational capitalism. From the most recent developments in biotechnology to the brainwashing effects of mass media, from the addictive rush of global currency speculation to the rapid-fire annihilation of tropical forests for chopsticks and oil, World on Fire is unsparing in its exposure of the corruption of our contemporary empire, or "Pax Americana." It suggests, paradoxically, that in this much-heralded "Age of Information," the dominant paradigms are disconnection and amnesia. The death of the author's tyrannical father after years of suffering from Alzheimer's becomes a potent symbol for a culture unable to face its own crimes or reckon with its own history. Drawing on sources including Noam Chomsky, Eduardo Galeano, and Vandana Shiva, Brownstein has created a new form combining poetry, personal narrative, and social analysis. He incites readers to look past a standardized remote-control world order and reconsider non-Western, more holistic social models. An anthem, manifesto, and call to arms, World on Fire asks the reader to step outside of ego's bomb shelter and face world upheaval without fear, thereby transforming disaster into opportunity and allowing the space for the creation of a new life. This is a stunning and timely work from a writer who "combines an acute understanding of the human soul with a bold, poetic imagination" (Paul Auster on Brownstein's story collection Music from the Evening of the World).

 930.  Root Cellaring: Natural Cold Storage of Fruits & Vegetables

Bubel, Mike, and Art, Pam (Editor), and Bubel, Nancy Storey Publishing 1991 882667033 2nd ed. Trade paperback

New Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. 320 p. Audien

Product Description Anyone can learn to store fruits and vegetables safely and naturally with a cool, dark space (even a closet! ) and the step-by-step advice in this book. From the Back Cover Root cellaring, as many people remember but only a few people still practice, is a way of using the earth's naturally cool, stable temperature to store perishable fruits and vegetables. Root cellaring, as Mike and Nancy Bubel explain here, is a no-cost, simple, low-technology, energy-saving way to keep the harvest fresh all year long. In Root Cellaring, the Bubels tell how to successfully use this natural storage approach. It's the first book devoted entirely to the subject, and it covers the subject with a thoroughness that makes it the only book you'll ever need on root cellaring. Root Cellaring will tell you: * How to choose vegetable and fruit varieties that will store best * Specific individual storage requirements for nearly 100 home garden crops * How to use root cellars in the country, in the city, and in any environment * How to build root cellars, indoors and out, big and small, plain and fancy * Case histories--reports on the root cellaring techniques and experiences of many households all over North America Root cellaring need not be strictly a country concept. Though it's often thought of as an adjunct to a large garden, a root cellar can in fact considerably stretch the resources of a small garden, making it easy to grow late succession crops for storage instead of many rows for canning and freezing. Best of all, root cellars can easily fit anywhere. Not everyone can live in the country, but everyone can benefit from natural cold storage.

 933.  Fixing America: Breaking the Stranglehold of Corporate Rule, Big Media, and the Religious Right

Buchanan, John 975290681 Trade Paperback

Brand New!

An explosive analysis of what ails the United States. An award-winning investigative reporter provides a clear, honest diagnosis of the country's chronic diseases — corporate rule, big media, and the religious right — in this damning analysis. Exposing the darker side of capitalism, this critique raises alarms about the security of democracy in today's society, including the rise of the corporate state, the insidious role of professional lobbyists, the emergence of religion and theocracy as a right-wing political tactic, the failure of the mass media, and the sinister presence of an Orwellian neo-fascism. Drawing on historic voices that include John Adams, Mahatma Gandhi, Thomas Jefferson, Robert F. Kennedy, James Madison, Thomas Paine, and Mark Twain, this treatise articulates a fresh vision for 21st-century America that deserves the attention of every patriot. John Buchanan is an internationally published journalist and author whose work has appeared in more than 30 countries on six continents.  936.  Robin Hood: People's Outlaw and Forest Hero, a Graphic Guide

Buhle, Paul 1604863188 Paperback

Brand New!

Where and what was Robin Hood? Why is an outlaw from fourteenth century England still a hero today, with films, festivals and songs dedicated to his living memory? This book explores the mysteries, the historical evidence, and the trajectory that led to centuries of village festivals around Mayday and the green space of nature unconquered by the forces in power. Great revolutionaries including William Morris adopted Robin as hero, children’s books offered many versions, and Robin entered modern popular culture with cheap novels, silent films and comics. There, in the world of popular culture, Robin Hood continues to holds unique and secure place. The “bad-good” hero of pulp urban fiction of the 1840s-50s, and more important, the Western outlaw who thwarts the bankers in pulps, films, and comics, is essentially Robin Hood. So are Zorro, the Cisco Kid, and countless Robin Hood knockoff characters in various media. Robin Hood has a special resonance for leftwing influences on American popular culture in Hollywood, film and television. During the 1930s-50s, future blacklist victims devised radical plots of “people’s outlaws,” including anti-fascist guerilla fighters, climaxing in The Adventures of Robin Hood, network television 1955-58, written under cover by victims of the Blacklist, seen by more viewers than any other version of Robin Hood. Robin Hood: People's Outlaw and Forest Hero also features 30 pages of collages and comic art, recuperating the artistic interpretations of Robin from seven centuries, and offering new comic art as a comic-within-a book. With text by Paul Buhle, comics and assorted drawings by Christopher Hutchinson, Robin Hood: People's Outlaw and Forest Hero adds another dimension to the history and meaning of rebellion.

New Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. 144 p. Contai

Through our indiscriminate use of pharmaceutical antibiotics in hospitals and factory farms, humans have created Superbugs tenacious and virulent bacteria that develop resistance to solitary antibiotic compounds at an alarming speed. In this empowering book, Stephen Buhner offers conclusive evidence that plant medicines, with their complex mix of multiple antibiotic compounds, are remarkably effective against drug-resistant bacteria. You'll learn how antibiotic herbs such as aloe, garlic, and grapefruit seed extract represent our best defense against bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, and Salmonella and how their use will ensure that, in the future, antibiotic drugs will still be there when we really need them.

 939.  Sacred and Herbal Healing Beers: The Secrets of Ancient Fermentation

Buhner, Stephen Harrod Siris Books 1998 937381667 Trade paperback

New

Share the secrets of the Ancients. Their healing beers and ales made from sacred and medicinal trees and plants are revealed in 120 actual recipes from primary sources nearly 2, 000 years old. This is the first comprehensive book ever written on the sacredness of ancient fermentation. The medicinal, spiritual, sacred, and ceremonial properties of nearly 200 plants when used as fermented beverages are explored in depth. Stephen Buhner captures the magic and mystery of creation myths as they relate to beer and fermentation. He explains how fermentation and plant use as medicine and psychotropics have always been companions on life's path, and are part of the exploration of what it means to be human. Often radical and controversial, Buhner has clearly and beautifully explored the mysterious universal beliefs between ancient and indigenous cultures as to the spirituality and healing power plants and fermentation. In the spirit of Carlos Castenada, he forges a quest in pursuit of the experiential. Highlights of comprehensive information never presented in one volume include: mead, honey and hive products; heather and coriander ales; psychotropic beers such as yarrow beer; and beers and ales from sacred and medicinal trees and plants.

 940.  Betting on the Muse

Bukowski, Charles Ecco 1996 9.78E+12 Trade paperback

New Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. 416 p. Audien

Virtually everything Black Sparrow publishes is worthwhile, but without Bukowski, whose 40-odd books kept Black Sparrow's bread buttered right up until his death in 1994, none of the rest of it would be possible. Fortunately, Buk left plenty of unpublished manuscript behind that, judging from this culling from it, is of a piece with the published stuff. That is, it consists of quasi-autobiographical poems and stories. The poems' lines are only one to six words long, and the stories' sentences aren't much longer. Poems and stories relay the adventures and attitudes, at all stages of his life, of loafer and lumpen intellectual Henry Chinaski. They are occasionally laugh-out-loud funny, occasionally laughable because Henry and his women and pals are such a bunch of slobs, and occasionally as boring as Henry and company claim their lives are. And, to tell the truth, they are effortlessly, magnetically readable, especially if you are susceptible to their bargain-basement existentialist charm. Plenty are.

One of Charles Bukowski's best, this beer-soaked, deliciously degenerate novel follows the wanderings of aspiring writer Henry Chinaski across World War II-era America. Deferred from military service, Chinaski travels from city to city, moving listlessly from one odd job to another, always needing money but never badly enough to keep a job. His day-to-day existence spirals into an endless litany of pathetic whores, sordid rooms, dreary embraces, and drunken brawls, as he makes his bitter, brilliant way from one drink to the next. Charles Bukowski's posthumous legend continues to grow. Factotum is a masterfully vivid evocation of slow-paced, low-life urbanity and alcoholism, and an excellent introduction to the fictional world of Charles Bukowski.

 961.  Absence of the Hero: Uncollected Stories and Essays Vol. 2 1946-1992

Bukowski, Charles Trade Paperback

Brand New!

Everyone's favorite Dirty Old Man returns with a new volume of uncollected work. Charles Bukowski (1920-1994), one of the most outrageous figures of 20th-century American literature, was so prolific that many significant pieces never found their way into his books. Absence of the Hero contains much of his earliest fiction, unseen in decades, as well as a number of previously unpublished stories and essays. The classic Bukowskian obsessions are here: sex, booze, and gambling, along with trenchant analysis of what he calls Playing and Being the Poet. Among the book's highlights are tales of his infamous public readings (The Big Dope Reading, I Just Write Poetry So I Can Go to Bed with Girls); a review of his own first book; hilarious installments of his newspaper column, Notes of a Dirty Old Man, including meditations on neo-Nazis and driving in Los Angeles; and an uncharacteristic tale of getting lost in the Utah woods (Bukowski Takes a Trip). Yet the book also showcases the other Bukowski -- an astute if offbeat literary critic. From his own Manifesto to his account of poetry in Los Angeles (A Foreword to These Poets) to idiosyncratic evaluations of Allen Ginsberg, Robert Creeley, LeRoi Jones, and Louis Zukofsky, Absence of the Hero reveals the intellectual hidden beneath the gruff exterior. The second volume of his uncollected prose, Absence of the Hero is a major addition to the Bukowski canon, essential for fans yet suitable for new readers as an introduction to the wide range of his work.

 963.  Ham on Rye

Bukowski, Charles 0876855575 Trade Paperback

Brand New!

In what is widely hailed as the best of his many novels, Charles Bukowski details the long, lonely years of his own hardscrabble youth in the raw voice of alter ego Henry Chinaski. From a harrowingly cheerless childhood in Germany through acne-riddled high school years and his adolescent discoveries of alcohol, women, and the Los Angeles Public Library's collection of D. H. Lawrence, Ham on Rye offers a crude, brutal, and savagely funny portrait of an outcast's coming-of-age during the desperate days of the Great Depression. Ham On Rye explores the brutal, brooding and sexual life of low-income, post-depression teenage existence. An autobiography rooted in Bukowski's childhood, this book is one filled with a sense of sadness and wasted potential.

In a posthumously published poem, Bukowski says he's succeeded If you read this after I am long dead. By that standard, he is indeed a success: this fifth and purportedly last posthumous book published since his death in 1994 offers his still-large audience more of what made Bukowski (1921 1994) and his hard-drinking alter ego Henry Chinaski famous, as chronicled, for example, in the films Barfly and Factotum. Rapid, chatty free verse records his devotion to racehorses, boxing and drinking; his sexual exploits and failures; his contempt for highbrow, hoity-toity literati, and his countervailing yearnings for literary fame. Early on, the poems show unapologetic nostalgia: in the 1930s, the landlord/ only got his rent/ when you had/ it. Some of the most memorable poems here record the poet's anxieties and delights while caring for his daughter. The final pages are devoted to fate, last things, old age, mortality and retrospectives on Bukowski's hard-drinking, prolific career: we were not put here to/ enjoy easy days and/ nights. Bukowski's style did not change in his last years; readers who have already written him off are unlikely to change their minds. Fans, however, may discover one of his strongest, most affecting books.

Burian, Al Trade Paperback

Brand New!

Burn Collector compiles the first nine issues of Al Burians sporadically published and widely acclaimed personal zine. Beginning in the mid-nineties, Burian distributed his work through the tight-knit network of the DIY punk music scene. Burn Collector caught on because of its unusual contentin a scene rife with dogmatic political diatribes and bland record reviews, Burian presented his readers with humorous anecdotes, philosophical musings, nuanced descriptions of odd locales and curious characters, taken mostly from outside of the punk milieuand also because of the authors narrative voice, which reflected the literary influences of Celine, Henry Miller, or even David Sedaris more than the influence of his contemporaries in the zine world. The writing in Burn Collector blueprinted a post-punk persona that was smart, strange, political but not correct, attached to subculture, but striving also for a connection to the world at large, and to the greater themes of human existence. The book went through six printings, along the way garnering acclaim from readers, inspiring a film (Matt McCormicks 2009, Some Days are Better than Others) and a major label album (Thrices 2003, The Artist in the Ambulance). More importantly, the book inspired readers to write and self-publish: to do it themselves, in the true punk spirit.

Burton-Rose, Daniel Trade Paperback

Brand New!

Bursting into existence in the Pacific Northwest in 1975, the George Jackson Brigade claimed 14 pipe bombings against corporate and state targets, as many bank robberies, and the daring rescue of a jailed member. Combining veterans of the prisoners' womens, gay, and black liberation movements, this organization was also ideologically diverse, consisting of both communists and anarchists. Concomitant with the Brigade's extensive armed work were prolific public communications. In more than a dozen communiqus and a substantial political statement, they sought to explain their intentions to the public while defying the law enforcement agencies that pursued them. Collected in one volume for the first time, Creating a Movement with Teeth makes available this body of propaganda and mediations on praxis. In addition, the collection assembles corporate media profiles of the organizations members and alternative press articles in which partisans thrash out the heated debates sparked in the progressive community by the eruption of an armed group in their midst. Creating a Movement with Teeth illuminates a forgotten chapter of the radical social movements of the 1970s in which diverse interests combined forces in a potent rejection of business as usual in the United States.

 987.  War is a Racket

Butler, General Smedley D.

New

stapled, photocopied zine/pamphlet; 12 pages In "War Is A Racket", Butler points to a variety of examples, mostly from World War I, where industrialists whose operations were subsidised by public funding were able to generate substantial profits essentially from mass human suffering. The work is divided into five chapters: 1. War is a racket 2. Who makes the profits? 3. Who pays the bills? 4. How to smash this racket! 5. To hell with war! and contains this key summary: "War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small 'inside' group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes. " The book is also interesting historically as Butler points out in 1935 that the US is engaging in military war games in the Pacific that are bound to provoke the Japanese. "The Japanese, a proud people, of course will be pleased beyond expression to see the united States fleet so close to Nippon's shores. Even as pleased as would be the residents of California were they to dimly discern through the morning mist, the Japanese fleet playing at war games off Los Angeles. " Butler explains that the excuse for the buildup of the US fleet and the war games is fear that "the great fleet of this supposed enemy will strike suddenly and annihilate 125, 000, 000 people. "

Butler, General Smedley D. Olympia, Washington Last Word Press 2010 Stapled, photocopied pamphlet/zine

12 pages stapled zine/pamphlet. War is a Racket is the title of two works, a speech and a booklet, by former U.S. Marine Major General Smedley Darlington Butler, one of only 19 people to be twice awarded the Medal of Honor, in which Butler frankly discusses from his experience as a career military officer how business interests have commercially benefited from warfare. After he retired from the Marine Corps., Gen. Butler made a nationwide tour in the early 1930s giving his speech "War is a Racket". The speech was so well received that he wrote a longer version as a small book with the same title that was published in 1935 by Round Table Press, Inc., New York. The booklet was also condensed in Reader's Digest (may they rot in hell) as a book supplement which helped popularize his message. Octavia E. Butler, the grande dame of science fiction, writes extraordinary, inspirational stories of ordinary people.Parable of the Soweris a hopeful tale set in a dystopian future United States of walled cities, disease, fires, and madness. Lauren Olamina is an 18-year-old woman with hyperempathy syndrome--if she sees another in pain, she feels their pain as acutely as if it were real.  991.  How to Convert Wood into Charcoal & Electricity

Buxton, Richard H. 1559182873 Trade Paperback

Brand New!

If you put wood into a pipe and heat it, gas, tar and water vapor will be driven off. You can pipe this gas around into the fire that is heating the pipe. When the whole unit cools, you can extract high grade charcoal. And we're talking about charcoal noticeably superior to the grocery store variety you use on your grill. If you route the generated gas through a series of primitive, low cost, easily made filters, you end up with a fuel that will power a law mower engine. You can use that engine to generate electricity with an alternator to charge batteries. In other words, you can make electricity from wood! Buxton will show you how it's done. He'll show you the unit he built from common brick, a piece of well casing, old plastic buckets, heater hose, an old Chevy truck radiator, silicone adhesive and so on. His main goal was to melt metal. He had built a cupola but just didn't get the results he expected. He traced the problem down to the coke he was using. After he started using his homemade charcoal instead of coke, he started melting iron like crazy! You can do the same. The author lives in the Appalachians and has access to a lot of hardwood. You may want or need to consider making charcoal from hardwood scavenged from pallets. And last I heard, scrap pallets grow almost everywhere. Making charcoal is essential information for the foundryman. The homesteader and survivalists will find the idea of turning wood into electricity a valuable skill. You can generate gas from any old wood, not just hardwood, and in fact, I wonder if you could convert brush, leaves, maybe even grain to electricity. It's an idea to try. True, you're only generating small amounts of power, but it's enough to power lights, radios, refrigerators, etc like those used by campers. And if those dipstick terrorists disable the power grid in your part of the country for six weeks at a time, this machine might just save your sweet rear end! This is about a proven idea that needs to be taken to the next level by experimenters. And that means YOU. Get a copy of this heavily illustrated report on how he did it and the results he got. It's unusual and certainly worth having in these uncertain times. Order a copy! 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 softcover 63 pages.

 998.  Living Cheaply with Style: Live Better and Spend Less

Callenbach, Ernest Ronin Publishing (CA) 2000 9.78E+12 2nd ed. Trade paperback

New Glued binding. 176 p. Self-Mastery Series, 3. Audi

Callenbach, a health and ecological writer in California, aims to show readers how to lead a self-determined, original lifestyle--and to do so frugally. His philosophy is based on three points--environment, health, and money--and he argues that doing something to benefit one of these points will inevitably benefit the other two. Another way of stating his philosophy is Enough is enough; more only encumbers. This leads him to recommend a lifestyle that is reminiscent of the counterculture of the 1960s. Callenbach applies this philosophy to every aspect of life: food, finances, car and home ownership, health, employment, and child rearing. The topics covered are wide-ranging but are rarely fully developed; the advice is occasionally suspect but overall sound, if more useful to those living in large cities than other areas. A useful book for past, present, and future flower children. -Judith M. Nixon, Purdue Univ. Lib., West Lafayette, Ind. Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc. This fun and practical guide offers a huge variety of tips on living for less with grace, humor, [and] imagination. The author covers a wide range of topics including food, housing, transportation, clothes, and entertainment.

Can fingerprints predict hand coordination in sports, will the two handed basketball free throw go off the rim or swish through the net, whether a golf drive will go straight, hook or slice? Can competitiveness, multitasking abilities, perhaps even degrees of honesty be predicted at birth? This book is certain to raise controversy throughout professional and academic circles as it challenges current psychological theories, and requires new approaches to child rearing, education aptitude and human resource assessments and psychological evaluations. This well illustrated and referenced work is the new primer for these fields.
